Exploring the World of 3D Printing: Insights from the Maker Everything Podcast

In Episode 002, Bryan DeLuca from Maker Build It and Todd Saal from The Creative Mind Trip dive into the fascinating world of 3D printing. They share their experiences, challenges, and the evolution of 3D printers, from resin to filament. Here's a detailed look at their insightful conversation.

What Inspired Us to Start 3D Printing

Bryan DeLuca: My journey with 3D printing began with resin printing, unlike most who start with filament. My first exposure to 3D printing was at NASA, where I saw a large-scale printer creating a model of Mars' topology. The precision and possibilities intrigued me, especially for creating detailed D&D miniatures.

Todd Saal: I procrastinated getting into 3D printing due to the high costs and the tinkering required with budget printers. However, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed me to explore digital modeling, and I eventually bought a Creality Ender 3 S1. After overcoming some initial user errors, I realized the potential of 3D printing for both functional and creative projects.

Overcoming Initial Challenges

Both Bryan and Todd faced challenges with their first printers. Todd mentioned the steep learning curve and the necessity of replacing parts due to user errors. Bryan highlighted the time-consuming process of manually leveling the bed on his first Ender 3 V2.

The Evolution of 3D Printing

The conversation shifted to the significant improvements in 3D printing technology. Prices have dropped, and budget printers have become more reliable and user-friendly. Bryan pointed out the rise of multi-color printing as a game-changer, allowing for more visually appealing prints without the need for painting.

Functional vs. Creative Printing

Todd Saal: Initially, I printed a lot of functional items due to supply chain issues during COVID-19. As my skills in digital modeling improved, I shifted towards more creative projects. I now enjoy sculpting and designing models as much as printing them.

Bryan DeLuca: My approach is about 50/50. I design creative pieces like sculptures and functional items out of necessity. For example, when a Z stop on one of my resin printers broke, I designed and printed a replacement.

The Future of 3D Printing

Bryan and Todd discussed the future of 3D printing, highlighting the need for advancements in materials and multi-color printing. Bryan emphasized the importance of good design and the potential for 3D printers to become as common as household appliances.
