At Maker Everything, we’re all about creativity, and sometimes, creativity takes us down unexpected paths. One of our recent guests, India, better known as The Depressed Ceramicist on TikTok, has a fascinating story about how she found her way into ceramics, built a business, and became an online sensation.
The Journey into Ceramics
India’s introduction to ceramics was a happy accident. She attended a local auction and stumbled upon a vintage ceramic Christmas tree. Having fond memories of her mother’s ceramic tree from her childhood, she bought it for just a dollar. Her interest grew from there, and she began collecting ceramics, particularly Christmas trees. While driving through her hometown, India noticed a sign for a local shop, The Art Room, advertising ceramic classes. She decided to check it out, hoping to paint her own ceramic trees.
India quickly became a regular at the studio, painting ceramics every chance she got. Eventually, she started working at The Art Room, which led to managing it—and, later, owning it! Now, India runs the studio, hosts ceramic classes, and continues to pursue her passion.
Behind the Scenes of Slip Casting
One of the most interesting parts of India’s creative process is slip casting, a technique used in ceramics to create precise forms. Slip casting involves filling plaster molds with liquid clay, called slip. The plaster absorbs moisture from the clay, forming a shell that hardens into the shape of the mold. After the clay dries, India carefully removes it from the mold, cleans the seam lines, and prepares it for firing.
This process requires patience, attention to detail, and plenty of trial and error. India describes how the clay, mold, and even humidity levels can impact the outcome. While she admits she’s still learning, India’s dedication and enthusiasm for the craft shine through in every piece she creates.
The TikTok Journey: Sharing Art with the World
India’s creativity took an unexpected turn when she started sharing her ceramics on TikTok. At first, she didn’t show her face and wasn’t sure where her videos would lead. But with a few viral videos—like one where she humorously shoots rubber bands into molds—India’s following grew quickly. Despite being an introvert, she embraced the platform and connected with an audience that appreciated both her artwork and her calming personality.
Her viral success showcases how authenticity and passion can resonate with a global audience. Today, India has a significant following on TikTok, where she continues to share her ceramics journey with her fans.
Teaching and Expanding Creativity
As the owner of The Art Room, India teaches ceramics classes to kids and adults alike. From ceramic Christmas tree workshops to custom planter classes, India’s studio offers something for everyone. Her goal is to provide a space where people can explore their creativity and learn new skills.
In addition to running in-person classes, India is expanding her online presence. She’s planning to launch a YouTube channel soon, where she will dive deeper into her creative process and share more behind-the-scenes content.
